Rates and diagnostic policy
One MINI at a time, by appointment, diagnosed before anything is recommended. What the rate covers, how diagnostic time is charged, and what gets explained to you along the way.
The rate
Standard labor rate is $150 per hour. The initial diagnostic charge is $150 and covers diagnosing one primary concern, described when the appointment is scheduled.
That is a MINI specialist rate rather than a general-repair rate, and it reflects what the diagnosis is performed with: factory-level scan software, an oscilloscope, wiring diagrams and the time to use them. Every repair documented on this site was diagnosed that way, and several of them ended with a part not being sold.
How diagnostic time is charged
Describe every concern you want looked at before the appointment. Additional concerns — a separate warning light, a noise, a leak, an electrical fault, a drivability complaint — each need their own diagnostic time and may carry their own charge.
Complex or intermittent faults can take longer than the initial hour. If a fault only appears under conditions that have to be reproduced, that time is real diagnostic work and is charged as such. You will be told before the time is spent, not after.
Any reduction of the final labor charge is at the technician's discretion and should not be assumed when scheduling.
What a code scan is not
A fault code names a detected condition and the circuit it was detected on. It does not name the failed part. Reading the code is the beginning of the diagnosis, and the charge covers the testing that follows it — measuring the circuit, checking the sensor's supply and signal, and confirming the fault is where the code implies before any part is recommended.
You get the explanation, not just the invoice
There is no queue pressure here. One car is worked on at a time, by appointment, and there is no next appointment waiting to push yours out the door. That is what makes the following part of the visit possible at all.
- How the component that failed actually works, and why it failed the way it did
- What the measurements showed, in plain terms, and what they ruled out
- Which further repairs are worth doing now and which can reasonably wait
- Any question you have about your MINI while it is here — asked as many times as you like
Maintenance owners are often never told about
Plenty of MINIs arrive with service history that covers oil changes and nothing else. Intervals are reviewed against the car's own history and MINI's schedule for its model and engine, and you are told what is genuinely due rather than sold a package.
- Automatic and manual transmission fluid — commonly assumed to be lifetime fill, and commonly not
- Coolant, and the condition of the system it is sitting in
- Brake fluid, which absorbs moisture on a time interval regardless of mileage
- Serpentine belt condition and the components it drives
- Engine air filter and cabin air filter
- Spark plug intervals, which differ between the naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines
Failure points worth catching early
Some of these engines and bodies have well-known weak points where a small part left alone turns into a large repair. Where one is found, it is pointed out with the reasoning, so the decision is yours before it becomes urgent.
- Coolant reservoir and housing — a cheap plastic part whose failure ends in an overheated engine
- Blocked sunroof drains — water reaches the footwell, and a wet footwell can take electrical modules with it, including the junction box electronics
- Oil and coolant leaks caught while they are still seeps, before they reach a belt, a sensor or the exhaust
Appointments and what is not offered
Service is by appointment only. There is no waiting room and no rental car — plan to leave the car. Gasoline MINI Cooper models only; hybrid and electric models are excluded.
